ROAR (Repeated Oral Assisted Reading)
ROAR is focused on helping students become fluent readers. With improved fluency comes comprehension. A student's focus is shifted from simply simply decoding words on a page to understanding the context. Through one-on-one reading tutoring (several times a week) students can improve their fluency and see their progress at the same time. ROAR Implementation Progress Charts Video Examples/Training |
Project Literacy Boost
For ELL students, Project Literacy Boost is a tutoring program that emphasizes reading stories one on one with students to help make up for a lack of lap-reading in younger years. For a student, having stories read aloud to them helps improve vocabulary and comprehension in the language they are hearing. For ELL students Project Literacy Boost gives students the chance to hear English stories being read aloud to them as they begin to learn the basics of reading in English themselves. Writing Activities
Practicing writing skills is one of the most important focuses for any student learning a language. Written language is one of the principle means of communication and one of the most difficult tasks to master. Through writing activities and games students can begin to work on accuracy and speed in spelling, word order, and grammar. Writing Activities and Games |
Vocabulary Activities

Alphabetics, Phonics and Phonemic Awareness Activities
Some of the most important building blocks to literacy are phonics and being able to recognize the letters in the alphabet. Without developing a strong basis in these areas, students have a much harder time learning to read and write. Through games and activities in which students can develop these skills, they begin to improve their literacy skills. Alphabetics, Phonics and Phonemic Awareness Activities and Games |
Reading Comprehension Activities
Reading without comprehension is simply decoding the written language. To gain value from being able to read one must be able to understand what the words are saying. Through games and activities that focus on improving reading comprehension students can practice synthesize the materials they read. Reading Comprehension Activities and Games |
Online Literacy Games
In addition to working with a tutor in person, ELL students can also benefit from working independently – with some guidance as necessary – and using technology available to them at home, school, a community center or the library.” Online Literacy Games |
Games to Play Without a Tutor
Tutoring sessions and classrooms are not the only places that literacy can be improved. Similar to the usefulness of online literacy sites/apps, games that students can at home (alone or with friends) are very helpful in their literacy development. I Need a Game to Play |
