Tips and Activities for
Tutoring ELL Students
A MN Literacy Council Summer Reads Capstone Project 2017
Welcome ELL Tutors!
This website was made as a capstone project for the AmeriCorps VISTA program, through the Minnesota Literacy Council. The idea for this project stems from my experiences as a literacy tutor in St. Peter, MN where I attend Gustavus Adolphus College and from my placement as a Summer Reads VISTA at Windom Dual Immersion School in southwest Minneapolis. As a literacy VISTA at Windom, I have worked with summer school students in grades K-4 to fight the summer slide by working to maintain and improve their English and Spanish literacy skills. The goal of this website is to compile tips and activity suggestions for individuals tutoring ELL students. Tutors assisting ELL students can play an important role in a student’s life by helping them develop crucial skills used both in and outside the classroom. The tips and activities located throughout this website have been collected from my personal experiences, research-supported programs, members of the MN Literacy Council Staff, and other ELL support sites. While I have used many of these activities with Spanish speaking ELL students, they can be adapted as necessary and used with students of any linguistic background. Best of luck in your tutoring endeavors and remember to have fun with your students! Sincerely, Savannah Maynard |
